9/13 & 9/20 La Epoca - The Palladium Era Movie Showing in New Haven & Hartford
Sat, Sep. 13 2008
Latin dancers of Mambo and Salsa and the general public are invited to the movie showings of "the most-anticipated movie in Latin music history" (Israel "Cachao" Lopez; March 2008, Phone Interview): "La Epoca - The Palladium Era" - a film about the roots behind the umbrella term "Salsa," and its affects on the generations of musicians and dancers that have followed since its conception to present day.

The film's first showing is on September 13, Saturday, at Club VanDome located at 102 Hamilton St in New Haven, CT at 6:30pm sharp and the film's second showing is on September 20, at La Casona Restaurant located at 681 Wethersfield Ave in Hartford, CT at 6:30pm sharp. Guests are encouraged to participate in an open discussion with the producers of the film immediately afterwards in an "open-forum." All guests are invited to both showings.

What makes these two evenings SO special is that portions of the movie were ACTUALLY FILMED AT various locations in Connecticut, including La Casona - and many of the dancers who were filmed - do appear in the movie - and some will be present to watch the movie at both showings!

Come and sit side-by-side with some of the film's cast members - and meet, up close and personal - the producers of the film! The film uncovers who the inventor of the mambo rhythm was and how Latin music and dance have become what they are, today.

This movie is jammed-packed with Latin dancing, original Latin music, black and white footage of the Palladium-era during the 1950's AND AMAZING information!!

Endorsed as "a MUST-SEE" (Cuban Pete, July 29 2008, Barbara Craddock Management) by international Mambo dance legend "Cuban Pete," a pioneer of Mambo dancing at the Palladium Ballroom in NY during the 1950's, "La Epoca is a feature-length documentary-film about the evolution of Latin music and dance from the Palladium-era (1948-1970) to present day. The film covers in-depth detail regarding the controversy over dancing "on 1" versus dancing "on 2," Mambo versus Salsa, and the film focuses heavily on the controversy over the the umbrella term "Salsa" and its affects on the musicians and dancers since the conception of the word's use to describe Latin music.

The film features music and rhythms that are very rarely heard in present day. Producers welcome all walks of life to view the movie and to live INSIDE the memories and experiences of the high-profile LEGENDARY musicians and dancers who appear in the film, such as "Cuban Pete," Charlie Rodriguez and Agustin Caraballoso and many others.

Very well-known are the names of Celia Cruz and Tito Puente - but how many times have you heard of the musicians who together made a lasting contribution to
today's Latin sounds?

Watch and listen to the musicians who were among the legends that USHERED IN all of the Latin music and rhythms that, in present day, have been meshed together - all under one umbrella term: "Salsa."

Tickets/Reservations: please, go to laepocafilm.com or call 203.788.1321 - or pay at the door. 3 or more tickets purchased together ONLY $6 each. Tickets regularly only $8.

Charlie Sepúlveda was his student at “Escuela Libre de Música” in Caguas, Puerto Rico during the early 80’s. Sepúlveda was then only 13 years old, already showing a natural virtuoso talent for the trumpet and also playing professionally with local orchestras. During the early 90’s González founded Guakibomjazz (Guakía’s Latin Jazz Youth Orchestra), the original founding members of the orchestra among others were: Damian Curtis, Luques Curtis, Zaccai Curtis, Joel González and Nelson Bello. All incredibly talented and dedicated students who went on to graduate from some of the best Music Schools in the Northeast: Berklee College of Music, Hartt School of Music and New England Conservatory of Music. Today, they are all professional international musicians sharing the stage with the best artists in the business and some exploring with a teaching career. For González to share the stage with his former students is the ultimate teacher’s reward. During their visit to Hartford the artists will present educational workshops at Guakiarte School for the Creative and Performing Arts, to benefit the students and the local musicians.

Kultura Borikua heats up the Wadsworth Atheneum with sizzling Latin Salsa

All Part of Thursday, July 3rd Phoenix Art After Hours Program

The hot holiday weekend begins with sizzle and spice as Kultura Borikua heats up the night with Latin Salsa 5:00-8:00 PM on Thursday, July 3rd as part of the Wadsworth’s Phoenix Art After Hours program. Put on your dancing shoes and step up to sensual salsa with a dance instructor to help you feel the heat. Wear red and receive a coupon for a $1 discount on a beverage of your choice. Complementing the Latin American flavor of the night is the feature film Lovesickness (Maldeamores), showing at 7:30 PM, and an engaging discussion on 20th Century Latin American art lead by Dr. Robin Greeley.

As a part of First Thursdays at the Wadsworth Atheneum, this opportunity to mingle with friends after work for a lively night of food, cocktails and culture is the best deal in town with $5 general admission – FREE to Phoenix employees and Museum Members. Let's Go Arts Members price: buy one admission, get one free. Check our web site for upcoming First Thursdays music and art offerings. The Wadsworth Atheneum stays open until 8 p.m. the first Thursday of every month courtesy of The Phoenix Companies, Inc.

Also on the schedule for the evening, join us to discuss Art & Identity in 20th Century Latin America with renowned scholar and Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Connecticut, Robin Greeley. A former professor at Harvard, Stanford, MIT, San Quentin Federal Penitentiary and U.C. Berkeley, Dr. Greeley is the author of several acclaimed books, including Surrealism and the Spanish Civil War (2006). Specializing in 20th century art in Mexico, Europe and Latin America along with politics and art (to name a couple of topics) Dr. Greeley will provide intriguing discussion to supplement this night of culture.

To balance off the dancing and discussion, we are presenting the film Maldeamore, a comical three-part look at the ironies of love. Puerto Rico’s official submission to the Best Foreign Language Film Category of the 2008 Academy Awards, Maldeamores includes stories of a young boy, a hostage situation, and a divorced elderly couple caught in a love triangle.

The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art is located at 600 Main St. Hartford, CT. 06103.  Telephone: 860-278-2670.   On the web at:  www.wadsworthatheneum.org

Fri, Jun. 27 2008
EAST HARTFORD, CT - A special evening with INCENDIO on Friday, June 27, at the East Hartford Community Cultural Center Auditorium.  Sponsored by The East Hartford Parks and Recreation Department, show time is 8:00 PM, and the doors will open at 7 PM. General Admission Tickets are $18 in advance, or $23 at the door. Refreshments and snacks will be available.
The band creates a polyrhythmic swirl of multiple Latin American music forms (boleros, cumbias, salsa, tango, mambo and the indigenous Peruvian valses criollos) and combines them with Indian, Arabic and Celtic flavors. Then they add just the right touch of jazz improvisation and dynamics, and the sizzling result is what one Incendio fan calls edge of your seat music. They've given close to 200 performances a year through the Western United States, and audience enthusiasm over their dynamic shows is generating buzz in the jazz and jamband communities as they graduate to bigger and more prestigious festivals.

5/27 ALTURAS DUO w/singers ADRIANA BALZAN & JOSE SACIN
Tue, May. 27 2008
The Alturas Duo has been recognized as one of the most entertaining ensembles in the chamber music world today.  The only group of its kind, the Duo formed with the idea of playing South American and classical music by bringing together the unusual combination of the viola, charango and guitar creating fiery programs that move with ease between Johann Sebastian Bach, South American folk rhythms and new music commissioned by the Duo.  The name Alturas (Spanish for Heights) is derived from the poem "Alturas de Macchu Picchu" by the Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda.  Alturas Duo members are: Carlos Boltes (Viola & Charango) of Santiago, Chile and Scott Hill (Guitar) of Ontario, Canada.
Venezuelan soprano Adriana Balzan “possesses a vibrant, clear soprano voice with a beautiful dark color, great extension and flexibility.”  She is an Opera singer in Colombia, Peru, Costa Rica, Honduras, Spain and the US. The voice of Peruvian baritone Jose Sacín “has a velvety nap and nice variety of color” (Washington Post) Sacín has performed as a soloist with the Washington Opera and Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.
